Dear Parents

In November 2017 we celebrated our 25th Birthday we cannot quite believe how much of an achievement it is to know our little company is 25 years old something we are very proud of.

As it was such a busy time of the year we decided to wait and have a big celebration in the new year. On 20th January we had a Silver Ball with all our staff enjoying a dinner and overnight stay and award ceremony at Kaevil House Hotel in Dunfermline it was so nice to see our staff out of uniform and all glamorous. We had a wonderful evening and have lots of photographs to share with you of our event in the next week or two so look out for them.

Many thanks to the parents who gave us some very kind words of support, poems and memories in our 25 years memory book which will be treasured.

Our awards went to the following people for length of service:
Julie Laidlaw – 25 Years
Rose Wright – 15 Years
Janice Robertson – 14 Years
Amanda Barton – 8 Years
Peter Goy – 7 Years
Ashleigh Fleming – 7 Years
Lauren Jackson – 6 Years
Gemma Cherry – 5 Years

Please congratulate them if you see them around, and I hope they stick around for many more years to come.

We are planning with the Parent Committee another few 25 years celebrations involving the children, news and dates on these will follow soon.

As I said in my last newsletter, our planning permission has been passed for a new extension onto the side of the building next to the toddler room that will provide us with much needed spaces. However there has been major delays in the building warrants due to the lack of staff at Edinburgh Council able to deal with issuing these. We hope to have this started shortly and will inform you as soon as I have further information.

[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_heading type=”h2″ font_weight=”normal” font_style=”normal” text_align=”left” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”20″ animation_delay=”0″]Fee Increase – April 2018[/cmsmasters_heading][cmsmasters_text animation_delay=”0″]

Unfortunately, this year sees us having to increase our fees again. Significant increases in costs to our business with living/national wage rises, and pension contributions are the main reason for this. Please be assured the increase we are having to apply, will go directly to cover these costs only and is not something I would have done if it was not necessary.

The fees will increase by £1.50 per day taking them to £41.50 for a full day and £31.50 for a half day. This still makes Nippers the most competitively priced nursery with other companies in this area charging more than £45 per day.

Discounts for siblings will still apply if your children attend 3 days or more per week. The increase will apply from April 2018 and we will forward on to your shortly the new amounts to allow you to increase standing orders or vouchers.

[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_heading type=”h2″ font_weight=”normal” font_style=”normal” text_align=”left” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”20″ animation_delay=”0″]Floor Books[/cmsmasters_heading][cmsmasters_text animation_delay=”0″]

We would encourage you to take a few minutes to take a look at the floor books within your child’s room in the nursery. These are full of pictures of what your children have been experiencing at nursery and are full of quotes from the children too. The staff take a lot of time with the children to prepare these books and work on them on a daily basis. If you do not see them in the room, ask the staff to see them.

[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_heading type=”h2″ font_weight=”normal” font_style=”normal” text_align=”left” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”20″ animation_delay=”0″]Accident at Home Forms[/cmsmasters_heading][cmsmasters_text animation_delay=”0″]

As part of our Child Protection requirements we have introduced a new form called Accident at Home Forms. These forms will be required to be filled out if your child has had a significant accident out with nursery and is then returning to nursery with signs of an injury. If they require medication you will also be required to sign this in before we can administer it.

[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_heading type=”h2″ font_weight=”normal” font_style=”normal” text_align=”left” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”20″ animation_delay=”0″]Loose Parts Play[/cmsmasters_heading][cmsmasters_text animation_delay=”0″]

As you will see around the nursery we are trying to use more materials within our
setting that are natural rather than plastic toys. We would be grateful if you can take
a look at the types of materials we are looking for on the displays in our entrance
areas and it you have any at home you want to get rid of we will be more than
happy to take them. I have attached a nice document about loose parts play and
how important it is for our children’s experiences. If you can take a few minutes to
read this, we would appreciate it.

There will be a few changes of staff coming in up a few weeks unfortunately Fiona Venelle has decided to step down from her role as Senior Pre-school Leader at Dalmeny. Fiona has started a BA in Childhood Studies and she is finding this along with her current role just a little too much work, which we can totally understand. Fiona will be staying with us in the preschool room as a Practitioner. I am delighted to announce that Ashleigh Fleming will be taking over from Fiona moving from our Tweenie Room and Andrea Heigh will be stepping up to Senior Practioner taking over from Ashleigh. We hope this will not cause any disruption and the handover between them will take place over the coming few weeks.

Natalie Main from Kirkliston will be leaving us to spend more time with her son before he goes to school. Thankyou Natalie and we hope you enjoy the next few months with Zach.

Natalie will be replaced with a new member of staff Megan Farrell who joins us in mid February from another nursery. She is a fully qualified practitioner and we look forward to welcoming her.

The children have been preparing for fathers day by making colourful card and  tasty treats for the best people in the world, their Father.

Father’s Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. In Catholic Europe, it has been celebrated on March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day) since the Middle Ages. This celebration was brought by the Spanish and Portuguese to Latin America, where March 19 is often still used for it, though many countries in Europe and the Americas have adopted the U.S. date, which is the third Sunday of June. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. It complements similar celebrations honoring family members, such as Mother’s DaySiblings Day and Grandparents Day.

The last few months have been very busy and this term has flown by so much so that my newsletter is a little late!

The nurseries have been busy, out and about in the community and enjoying trips to the farm, zoo, museums & festivals and the nurseries will continue to do so over the coming months. Each room will continue with their own topic of choice in addition to this. Your room seniors will provide you with more information on any outings planned over the weeks ahead.

It will be a very emotional time for us over the next month or two when 32 children will be leaving the nurseries to go to school some of which have been with us since they are 6 months old. Please bear with us over the next few months it is a very busy time for us in the office preparing for new arrivals and departing children and trying to co-ordinate all this is quite a task!! If your child is leaving and you have not provided us with leaving dates can you please do so as soon as possible.

The Kirkliston nursery has seen a revamp of our nursery garden in Kirkliston with our new Astro Turf area which is proving a big hit with the children. Many thanks to our Parent Committee and Parents who kindly donated £500 towards the cost of this. This area is still being developed and we will continue to add new resources over the coming months.

In Dalmeny our new outdoor class room is up and running and the children have been instrumental in providing us with ideas of what they wanted to see in the classroom. We have decided to call it “The Barn”. If you have not had a chance pop in and take a look we love it!

We are in the process of applying for planning permission to add on a small extension to our building in Dalmeny to the side of our toddler room. This will allow us to expand our numbers and assist in reducing our very long waiting list! We are awaiting approval on the plans by our landlord and should have them back soon. It will then simply be a matter of time awaiting approval of planning permission so fingers crossed!

We hope you like our new developments!

The inspector spent two days in the nursery and had a chance to meet with not only the children but staff and some parents to hear your views. She was very pleased with the nursery its developments and the management and leadership of the nursery. We were awarded Level 5 grades across all areas which is extremely good. A big thank you to you all for helping us make this a great nursery and to our staff who work very hard at ensuring we meet these standards.[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_heading type=”h2″ font_weight=”normal” font_style=”normal” text_align=”left” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”20″ animation_delay=”0″]Reminder Web Site – Parent Area[/cmsmasters_heading][cmsmasters_text animation_delay=”0″]

Easter, one of the oldest Christian traditions, is the celebration of the last week of Jesus’ life, his death, and his resurrection. For Christians, Easter symbolises the dawn of a new life and the high point of the Christian calendar.

While defined as a Christian holiday, Easter has many of its roots in the traditions and rituals of the pagan people who inhabited the United Kingdom before its wide spread conversion to the Christian faith. Scholars believe that Easter was named for “Eostre”, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the spring.

The actual day of Easter, unlike Christmas, is not a set date. Always on a Sunday, Easter can vary in date by country depending on whether the Gregorian or Julian calendar is being used. The UK, which follows the Gregorian calendar, celebrates Easter on the Sunday following the first full moon that occurs after the first day of spring. Using this timeline, Easter can vary in date from as early as the 22nd of March to as far into spring as the 25th of April.

Or it is a celebration of chocolate eggs, egg hunts, messy play and a great excuse to get out doors in the fresh air and mess around with water.

Saint Patrick’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, “the Day of the Festival of Patrick”), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, cèilidhs, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians who belong to liturgical denominations also attend church services and historically the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday’s tradition of alcohol consumption.

Patrick was a 5th-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Much of what is known about Saint Patrick comes from the Declaration, which was allegedly written by Patrick himself. It is believed that he was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century, into a wealthy Romano-British family. His father was a deacon and his grandfather was a priest in the Christian church. According to the Declaration, at the age of sixteen, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Gaelic Ireland. It says that he spent six years there working as a shepherd and that during this time he “found God”. The Declaration says that God told Patrick to flee to the coast, where a ship would be waiting to take him home. After making his way home, Patrick went on to become a priest.

According to tradition, Patrick returned to Ireland to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. The Declaration says that he spent many years evangelising in the northern half of Ireland and converted “thousands”. Patrick’s efforts against the druids were eventually turned into an allegory in which he drove “snakes” out of Ireland (Ireland never had any snakes).

Tradition holds that he died on 17 March and was buried at Downpatrick. Over the following centuries, many legends grew up around Patrick and he became Ireland’s foremost saint.

The food on our tables, the tea and coffee in our mugs, all from farmers who toil, sweat and slog.

However hard they work to provide the things we depend on, millions of farmers in developing countries aren’t paid what they deserve. It’s not a new problem.

We need to amplify the voices of marginalised producers as much as ever in 2017.

When we come together we can change the way people think about trade and the products on our shelves – the Fairtrade movement is made up of ordinary people doing extraordinary things in their communities for Fairtrade. Your actions help shoppers to make choices that change the lives of farmers and workers.

Join thousands of others across the UK this Fairtrade Fortnight to help our friends, neighbours, colleagues and communities to put Fairtrade in their break and take exploitation out.
